Lesson 9
Shadow Puppets.
Shadow puppets
What are shadow puppets? Shadow puppets are figures that have been cut out of opaque material. This can be leather, wood, plastic or cardboard. Sometimes the material is translucent, which can make that part of the shadow coloured. The puppets are placed behind a white screen or sheet and positioned flat against this screen. The shadow is created by a light that illuminates (lights up) the screen from behind. The puppets are moved and controlled by rods attached to different parts of the puppet.
Where do shadow puppets come from?
Many countries around the world use shadow puppets for entertainment. The history of shadow puppets suggests that they were first used in Asia, most likely China.

I can't get enough of this puppeteer, this stimulus provides inspiration and high expectation.
This site provides instructions, templates and information for a great lesson on shadow puppets.
This Resource has lesson plans, videos and instruction for a lesson that ties into this unit.

Make predictions about the way light travels and determine whether the predictions are correct
Use online resources to learn how shadows are formed
Demonstrate an understanding of the terms translucent, opaque, and transparent through the creation of shadow puppets
Explore the way light interacts with matter by way of transmission, absorption, and reflection
Make observations about the properties of shadows based on online interactive activities
Experiment with a light source, puppet, and screen to create different shadow effects, demonstrating an understanding that the properties of a shadow are determined by the intensity and position of the light source and the distances and angles between the light, object, and surface
In groups, create and perform shadow plays.
