Von Guerard’s images offer several interpretations of the Australian bush and its people – from wild, brooding Romantic landscapes, to sensitive, and sometimes humorous, sketches of its inhabitants. He sketched extensively on his travels around the countryside, later working some of these sketches up into spectacular oil paintings for exhibition and sale.
Artists paint from their point of view, Von Guerrd often gave the landscape a romantic quality, was this the landscape from his point of view? Did his view of the landscape have a bias? Was this bias included to make his work more saleable? Have a look at the photographs of the goldfields, does this image match the photos? Have a look at the link that takes you to his sketchbooks, does this painting match the sketches he has made?

How about this artist? Do you think that he has shown a bias? Is for the miners? Or is he on the side of the Troopers?
Lesson 5
Examining sources to identify points of view.
Lesson Objectives:
- Locating and recording information.
- Revise questions posed about Peter Lalor and the Eureka Stockade
- Locate relevant information in sources about the changes in the Victorian population brought about by the gold rushes in the 1850s?
Have a look at the sources that you have selected to use, can you identify a point of view
How did the miners feel about the introduction of mining licences?
Why might people at the time have different points of view about the Eureka Stockade?
People have different points of view about the actions of Peter Lalor and the Eureka Stockade.
Sources may give only one point of view or give different points of view.

Can you describe different points of view regarding the Eureka Stockade?
Identify two different points of view from the sources.
(They could be the point of view of a person or of a group).
Describe the two different points of view about the Eureka Stockade.
This is an example of how we can use our information to look at point of view.

This is an example of how we can use our information to look at point of view.
First point of view would be the miners on the Victorian Goldfields
|
Second point of view would be the government officials who represented the British Government.
|
The miners thought that Peter Lalor was a hero who fought for the rights of miners on the goldfields.
How do we know this? Other miners followed his lead and swore an oath, ‘We swear by The Southern Cross to stand truly by each other, and fight to defend our rights and liberties. Why did they have this point of view? Miners did not want to pay for Mining Licences and taxes charged by the British Government. |
The officials thought that Peter Lalor was a dangerous radical who tried to undermine the government.
How do we know this? After the battle… many diggers were taken prisoner, but Peter Lalor escaped…with his left arm shattered Why did they have this point of view? Peter Lalor helped miners work together to fight against paying taxes to the British government and holding Mining Licences. |

This is a fantastic document that guides a historical inqiry, the communication device she has used is a graphic novel style.
This example shows a discussion on points of view but I like the questions in the activity that calls on the students to put themselves in the picture.
