What is a humanitarian?
When the word humanitarian is used as a noun, it means a person who works hard to make changes for the better for people.
Many different groups of people brought changes to colonial Australia including politicians, explorers, activists, religious leaders, artists and writers, and entrepreneurs.
Look at the words in the following table to make sure you know what each of these words means.
Read the examples of people who are significant in these areas.

Context: Humanitarian involvement with female immigrants in Australia
Actions:
My perspective: Chisholm’s compassionate humanitarian work with migrants helped to provide greater stability in the Australian colonies.
Context: Humanitarian involvement with female immigrants in Australia
Actions:
- Personally accompanied groups of women travelling to the colony of New South Wales.
- Established employment agencies in rural centres.
- Found work for unemployed migrants – resulting in the closure of the Female Immigrants Home.
- Extended assistance to families as well as single women.
- Assisted 14 000 people to settle in New South Wales.
- Proposed the construction of shelters for people travelling to the goldfields – an idea which was given government support.
- Significance (answer using the key concepts of):
- Continuity and change - The encouragement of migration to Australia and the promotion of migration reform.
- Cause and effect Her fight for better shipboard conditions for migrants resulted in the passing of the Passenger Act of 1852.

Name: Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth
Context: Inland Explorers of Australia - New South Wales
Actions: They navigated their way through thick scrub by marking trees and cutting a path to the heights of Mount Blaxland (in the Blue Mountains).
This guided access to the forest and grass land plains which lay to the west of Sydney.
Significance of actions in bringing about change:
The explorers found good grazing land for farmers to use. This meant that the colony could expand and there would be enough pasture to graze cattle and sheep or to grow crops.
My point of view:
I think these explorers were important because the colony could expand, gain more resources and be successful.
